Conservative sites are taking Obama to task over an alleged breach of military rules.

“The commander in chief of the American armed forces today forced a violation of Marine Corps regulations, so he wouldn’t get wet,” writes the Daily Caller‘s Mike Piccione.

While giving an outdoor press conference with the Turkish Prime Minister, Obama ordered marines to shield the two leaders with umbrellas when it started raining.

According to Marine Corps rules (regulation MCO P1020.34F, to be precise), male Marines are not permitted to carry umbrellas while in uniform.

There are apparently no exceptions to the rule, not even for the commander in chief, without the permission of the Commandant of the Marine Corps. According to The Marine Corps Uniform Regulations, “No officer or official shall issue instructions which conflict with, alter, or amend any provision without the approval of the Commandant of the Marine Corps.”

At the time, Obama commented that the Turkish prime minister may not have a change of clothes – suggesting that his act in calling for the umbrellas was motivated by consideration for a foreign dignitary, rather than concern for his own comfort.
