Wouldn’t it be easier if the word “the” was just simply a letter?

Well at least one person seems to think so.

Aussie restaurateur, Paul Mathis has invented a new letter of the alphabet to replace the word “the” because he thinks it is more efficient.

The letter looks like the Cyrillic letter ‘Ћ’. If an upper case T and a lower case h were to have a typographic baby, this is what it would look like.

Mathis has invested $38,000 into developing the symbol which he would like to see added as a 27th letter of the alphabet.

“The word ‘and’ is only the fifth-most used word in English and it has its own symbol – the ampersand,” Mathis told The Age. “Isn’t it time we accorded the same respect to ‘the’?”

Schoolboy Hurls Sandwich at Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard

Prime Minister Julia Gillard says she’s treating a sandwich attack at a Queensland school as a laughing matter – but won’t be offering a Prime Ministerial pardon.

Kyle Thomson, 16, has been suspended for 15 days after being blamed for throwing the sandwich as an otherwise friendly group of students mobbed the PM.

Kyle says he wasn’t the sandwich thrower, and –  in a move apparently straight out of the Secret Service textbook – says he was trying to knock it out of another student’s hand.

“I would like to say that I am sorry that it happened to her,” Mr Thomson told Ms Gillard during a radio interview on B105.

“But I’m innocent and I did not throw it.”

Ms Gillard, who was surprised with the call from the schoolboy during a live interview, laughed it off.

Asked if she would lobby for Kyle – who has been suspended for his alleged actions – to get a pardon, Ms Gillard declined.

Cruise Ship Pair Feared Lost At Sea

A COUPLE are believed to have gone overboard while on a luxury cruise sparking a major sea and air search off the NSW mid-north coast.

The search by the NSW police and Australian Search and Rescue for the man, 30, and woman 27 is focused on an area 60 nautical miles from Forster on the state’s mid-north coast 100km north of Port Macquarie.

It was prompted after security footage from on-board the Carnival Spirit shows the couple going overboard from the mid-deck of the cruise ship at 8:50pm on Wednesday.

However, it was only realised that the couple, from NSW, were missing when the ship docked in at the Overseas Passenger Terminal at Sydney early on Thursday morning.

Staff on-board searched for the missing pair before contacting police at 11.30am.
