BLOG EDITOR’S REMARKS: First off, as a war veteran myself, I want to start this article by saying, it is not required for any president to return salutes to those Marines who stand guard and salute his entry points. I personally know that most military members hate seeing presidents returning salutes back who have NEVER served in the armed forces themselves. With that said, those Marines are NOT saluting Mr. Obama, or Mr. Bill Clinton, or whoever is the president at the time, but rather, the position, the office in which Mr. Obama holds — Commander-in-Chief. Mr. Obama is a civilian and civilians are not required to return salutes. Additionally, even if a military officer is in civilian clothes, he is NOT required to return salutes, because he is out of uniform. Again stating the fact that the salutes are not directed towards the person but rather the office held, or the rank which is shown on the uniform. Thank you for reading
Under gray skies and intermittent drizzle, President Obama boarded Marine One at 9:30 a.m. EDT in an open press event.
A few White House regulars were atwitter (and on Twitter) when the President walked directly up the steps of Marine One without saluting the Marine on duty. He soon came out of the helicopter, walked down the steps, shook hands with the Marine and engaged in a brief conversation.
